Dogecoin rides the same UTXO engine as Bitcoin, with its own parameters and its own legacy signing: one implementation, proven once, rather than a copy that drifts.
A fee above the amount is refused
Dogecoin fees are quoted per kilobyte and its amounts are large, which is exactly the shape that turns a transfer into a donation to a miner. A send whose fee exceeds what it moves is refused before the ceremony, with no way to arm it.
Dust is named, not hidden
An output below the network’s dust limit is pointed out on the offline device before you approve it, because a transaction that cannot relay is a transaction that fails after you have signed.

Can I keep DOGE on an air-gapped wallet for free?

How does the signature reach the browser?
Optically. The extension shows the transaction as a QR code, the offline device scans it, you approve it there, and it shows the signature back as another QR code. No cable, no Bluetooth, no pairing.
Does it protect me from a fee mistake?
A send whose fee is larger than the amount it moves is refused outright, and outputs below the dust limit are named on the review screen before you sign.
